Here are the facts as revealed by Paramount Pictures and Sony Pictures Entertainment today:
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn will hit U.S. theatres in December 2011, about a month after it reaches the rest of the world.
It’ll also be released in 3-D where available.
Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Gad Elmaleh, Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook are all said to be involved.
Here’s why I’m not sold on the idea that Tintin is going to put up the numbers the studios are expecting: I don’t know anybody that claims any fondness for Tintin, either as a comic book or as a cartoon. Why, then, will people suddenly lose their shit with joy and rush to the theatres for the motion capture release? We’re told repeatedly that Tintin is a character beloved of children and adults anywhere, but the evidence simply doesn’t back that up.

This is good news indeed. Any movie involving Simon Pegg and Nick Frost is guaranteed to be at least moderately entertaining, and with a premise as accommodating as this movie’s, it should be better still. For those not up to speed, messrs Pegg and Frost are set to shoot a movie simply called “Paul” which centres on a pair of road-tripping sci-fi fanatics who somehow stumble upon an alien who has escaped from Area 51. Today’s news confirms that the alien in question, Paul, will be voiced by Seth Rogen.

I know, I know: This happened yesterday. Since I was suffering from what was apparently a more benign strain of pneumonic plague, however, I was unable to respond to the news with anything more than a premature death rattle and some mild foaming about the mouth. Incidentally, I discovered that the cure for pneumonic plague is Mexican food followed by a brief period of unconsciousness.

Trailers from Guy Ritchie’s upcoming Sherlock Holmes film starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams hit the internet recently and are sure to spark plenty of discussion.
As a big fan of the original stories, my initial response is that this will be a much more in-your-face version of the beloved character. Holmes is a competent boxer and is decent with a revolver in the older stories, but these facts are hardly celebrated. The movie looks like it will place action in the foreground, perhaps even over the mystery elements. It also appears that the Sherlock Holmes that is often “asexual” has been removed for one that is more of a player, although trailers can be deceiving in their effort to draw in larger audiences.

It’s been great sharing my thoughts on movie news and rumors (and a bit o’ pop culture) with you folks, but The Bad and Ugly will close a week from today, Friday May 15th.
If the blame must fall on someone, blame the economy, because my bosses and editors have been nothing but supportive of this tiny blog that was, at best, the mutated cousin of Coming Soon.
As far as I know, the actual webspace and URL will remain the same and all this content can still be found here, so over the next week, I’ll be shutting out the site with some cool stuff for movie geeks . I have some of these things planned, but since the site is and has always been about the circle of internet pop-culture junkies we all are/know, please feel free to shoot me an e-mail via the above “SEND TIPS” link about…well, about anything.
I’ll be back on Monday 05/11/09 on a regular schedule to bring you what I would want from a site like mine. Considering I won’t be around to follow up on new castings and rumors, we’ll be looking an general pieces about the industry and the internet industry that follows said industry. I’ll discuss what sites I feel make a “balanced diet” of daily film reading, re-highlight some of my old posts with new updates (Hunt For Gollum should totally be on the Best Fan Films list) and generally try to organize this site’s information so it can be readily accessible.
It’s been a privilege sharing with you. I mean it.

Below is the video from the New York Post reporting on the Times Square car crash on the set of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice starring Nicolas Cage. For a chase scene in the film, a stunt Ferrari was driving down seventh avenue chasing a stunt Mercedes, when the the Ferrari lost control and skidded up onto the sidewalk and into a Sbarro pizza. A woman was grazed by the car and was treated for minor injuries, as was a man who was hit by a lamp post struck by the stunt car.

I don’t know what’s up with this madness, but Sony Pictures Classics, who acquired the Duncan Jones-directed Moon at Sundance this year, seems to be only releasing the Sam Rockwell sci-fi drama in New York and LA come June 12th.
Which is much worse than this movie should be doing, distribution-wise. Granted, I’m only going by what I’ve heard about the film, but tomorrow when I head to the Tribecca Film Festival screening and try to steal myself a poster, I have a feeling I’ll be bemoaning this more.
