Some great news for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans on this, the 25th Anniversary of the characters creation. Looks like the TMNT movie that was buzzing around the internet late last summer is actually happening, as Peter Laird told us it might in September

From Variety:

The Mirage Group, which owns the property, is moving forward with a live-action film focusing on the origins of the iconic crime fighters. Project, targeted for release in 2011, would mark the fifth bigscreen outing for the sewer-dwelling heroes Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael as well as their master Splinter.

News coincides with the Turtles’ 25th anniversary celebration, which kicks off Thursday in New York as the first “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” film unspools at the Tribeca Film Festival.

That Tribecca Screening, which I’m totally trying to get to this evening (Deets HERE), and it’s awesomeness non-withstanding, I’m all for another Turtle movie. Really, I’m a big fan of the New Line original and the sequel, Secret Of The Ooze, even if it was a little more cartoony.

I even dragged an ex-girlfriend to the CGI one that came out two years ago. Wasn’t great, but it was enjoyable.

Peter Laird, who created the Turtles with Kevin Eastman in May 1984 says that this new re-boot of the Turtles franchise will remain closer to the comic books and “the pic may employ face replacement technology, which would allow the turtles to be much more expressive.”

I guess that means part costume with CGI faces?

Suddenly, the involvement of Scott Mednick makes more sense. Mednick’s most recent producer cred: Where The Wild Things Are.

I’m in guys. Turtle power.
