Know who Declan O’Brien is? Me neither. Here’s his IMDB profile.
As you can see, he’s worked on stuff, just stuff I haven’t seen.
In this brave new world of unoriginal ideas, where Spider-Man can go from comics to cartoons to live action movies to a U2 musical, or where The Producers can go from movie to Broadway musical to movie based on the Broadway musical, it’s about time someone revisited The Little Shop of Horrors, don’t you think…?
From ShockTillYouDrop:
“I just optioned the remake rights,” O’Brien announced to ShockTillYouDrop.com this morning. “We’re going to set that up as a studio feature.” The director is going to be shepherded by Roger Corman and The Bourne Identity producer Andrew Tennenbaum “After I did this movie for Roger called Cyclops he was so happy he said, ‘This is the best movie that’s come through my doors in 20 years, so here’s my catalogue, pick something else.’”
You might, or might not, remember that Little Shop of Horrors was first Roger Corman a black and white film with star Jonathan Haze. You might not remember Haze, because the version that I ended up owning had its cover re-designed to showcase a then-no-named actor that later earned the A-List status of only needing a first name: Jack (Nicholson).
The film was then re-done as a musical by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman that was turned into a movie come ‘86. That’s the Rick Moranis-starring, Frank Oz directed version you’re probably familiar with.
Of course the new Little Shop won’t be a musical, but will hopefully remain a black comedy.
Someone put Slither on Declan O’Brien’s Netflix queue.
