Naomi Watts and Clive Owen were all around New York yesterday premiering The International, an action film that seems to be about a bank using investment money to kill people, probably important people, if you need a bank’s worth of money to pay for their deaths. Watts looked classy, as did Owen, which just got me thinking about the movie, which got me feeling really bad about the state of things.
When a preview for The International came on while I was watching television with some people (maybe it was the Grammys? I was wishing I was sleeping all through those), I asked the question: “Are they ever going to play to irony that this movie was filmed far before the financial crisis became the centerpiece of American politics? Because right now it’s like they are rolling out this movie about a BANK using the people’s money to KILL PEOPLE while the news plays stories of a Wall Street investor bonus/salary-cap? Is someone on marketing just missing the point?”
These photos of the premiere makes me think that this film was put into the the marketing machine on the “input” side sand all that came out on the other end was a printout that read: “Attractive A-List stars, minimal marketing needed.”
Of course, there’s always the possibility the film is no good and therefore, I’m not supposed to be drawing so much attention to it. Maybe it only exists to give you something to see this weekend that isn’t boobs and machete murder…
Wait, that’s this weekend.
Yeah, screw The International.
