Though the title of this post sounds kind of dirty, it’s actually a PR Hole. But PR Hole also sounds dirty, like BDSM Trench, so we might as well get to the ’splaining and stop all this ‘pologizing.

Jeremy Piven dropped out of the David Mamet Play Speed The Plow because he had mercury toxicity caused by eating too much sushi for a prolonged period of time.

If that sounded like a bullsh*t excuse to you last week, you’re about where the cast and crew of Speed The Plow are now…

From Page Six:

“Skeptical? You could certainly say we’re skeptical,” said one investor of Piven’s excuse.

The producers are seeking a second opinion.

“We have recourse to have Jeremy examined by another doctor, and we are going to exercise that,” another investor said, hinting at legal action.

A third investor lamented, “We didn’t have star insurance, but we should have had a- -hole insurance.”

Piven’s “Speed-the-Plow” co-stars weren’t exactly behind him.

“We have not heard from him. We do not know where he is,” a visibly angered Raul Esparza said outside the Barrymore Theatre after an emergency rehearsal with Piven’s replacement. “It’s very disappointing when your co-star leaves.”

Asked about Piven’s claim of mercury poisoning, Esparza replied, “[If] that’s what he says, that’s what he says.”

What’s more, rumors persist that Piven was looking for a way out of the production, telling visiting friends he was “bored out of his mind.” Piven was calling around looking for his own replacement much earlier than the announcement, something that is - well - not done by talent on Broadway. Producers have tapped William H. Macy to take over Piven’s role in two weeks. For now, Tony-winner Norbert Leo Butz is the emergency fill-in.
