The trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine has hit the nets in various YouTube and Hi Def forms, and it’s mildly concerning because of the expansion of the story from the few comic con clips that mostly centered on Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Liev Schreiber Victor Creed/Sabertooth.
This trailer has Logan getting shot in the civil war, getting shot at in WWII and getting shot right out of the adamantium process that gives Wolvie his claws and super-strong bone-structure, and that’s without using the firing-squad scene that played so well at Comic Con (”How’d it feel?” “It tickled.”). If getting shot many-a-time doesn’t convince you that Wolverine is an invincible badass, maybe a whole bunch of explosions will do, or a cool-looking, but totally ridiculous aerial leap from an exploding car onto the front of a helicopter.
If the action isn’t your thing, there’s always mutant cameo spotting. Kevin Durand, Ryan Reynolds and Will.I.Am make brief appearances as The Blob, Deadpool and John Wraith, but in case you didn;t know that fan-favorite Gambit was debuting in this film, they make sure Jackson name checks him right after you see Friday Night Lights’ Taylor Kitsch toss some cards in the air.
It’s not that the trailer isn’t good, it is, it’s that we can’t think of a way all of these elements can easily mesh with the footage we’ve seen bootlegged before without creating a story so superficial and based on episodic “catch the mutants” structure that finally ends with the showdown between Sabertooth and Wolverine before Jackman blows up the Weapon X facility that won’t be seen again (time line wise) until the events of X2.
After watching the trailer, we just feel like this is the most excited we’re going to be about this movie.
