Monsters Vs. Aliens features a comedy super-cast of Stephen Colbert, Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett Rainn Wilson and - Jack Bauer himself - Keifer Sutherland. It’s animated, it’s in Tru-3D and it’s about an alien coming to earth and the government unleashing monsters to stop him.
Doesn’t sound too bad, and the featurette we have below the cut isn’t too shabby either. But, is it worth paying extra moolah when you get to theaters?
It’s been reported that Dreamworks will use Monsters Vs. Aliens as thier first “premium” 3D film, which could include as much as a $5 additional fee if you want to don some glasses and jump into the third computer-animated demension.

Why the sudden up in prices? First, the credit crunch is really restricting the equipment flow to 3D filmmakers, seeing some paying early for 3D equipment that should be dropping in price with the advent of mainstream 3D films. Also, while 3D theaters increas in numbers, screens rigged to play 3D films continue to do double the attendence of normal theaters, but do three time the monetary business.
Have a 3D film? Have some 3D screens? All data points to moviegoers willing to plunk down an extra few bucks to experience the “future of entertainment.” But for those of us in cities like New York, that might mean a $16 night out alone…with no popcorn.
