When did we thing Beverly Hills Cop 4 was a bad idea? That would be May 29th of this year, when we heard that it was indeed happening with Bret Ratner at the helm. The Rat! He’s going to make a good BHC4?

Don’t think so.

Eddie Murphy himself told MTV: “All I know is that it’s gonna be something that’s special. I’m not doing just, hey give me some big check and I go off [does the Foley laugh] and shoot the gun and jump over cars. Like, that’s some bullsh-t. If I do it, it’s gonna be some sh-t that’s right!”

Thing is, it looks like they didn’t give Axel any cool shit to do, and maybe that’s why the script is held up, waiting for Murphy to come around…

From Latino Review’s script peek:

The really weird thing is that Axel Foley just isn’t a character in this movie. In the opening he’s followed a suspect into Canada and is illegally extraditing him, and from there he never takes a breather to be anything but a supercop. It’s almost like the writers took an Arnold Schwarzenneger script they had lying around and changed the details to make it a Beverly Hills Cop movie. There’s no fun in it.

The basic story of Beverly Hills Cop 2009 isn’t terrible. It’s a pretty standard police corruption story that has a personal edge for Axel Foley, and [Screenwriters Michael] Brandt and [Derek] Haas make it feel like an 80s action film by keeping the action more grounded, even though the final fight does include RPGs. But there’s no fun in the movie and it feels like it needs another draft to make the film an Axel Foley adventure and not a generic cop getting revenge picture.

These two guys (Brandt and Haas) have done Wanted, 3:10 To Yuma, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and 3:10 was a remake, so what about their resume doesn’t suggest a shallow cop movie?
