Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, Orgazmo, Team America: World Police and Baseketball all teaming up with the creators of the Avenue Q puppet-musical to create a whole ‘nother musical theater piece, tentatively titled “Mormon Musical.”
Avenue Q is the off-Broadway show featuring human and puppet characters having sex, living together and generally acting “real,” but in puppet form.
We actually heard about this a few years ago from the horse’s mouth at a dinner with the Avenue Q writers Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx (yeah, everyone in New York knows each other). Since then, occasionally details have hit the web, but none have included a tentative date for the show to be done, until today, when we heard from Mollygood that the musical will bow into NYC in 2009.
This probably means that Parker and Stone will be writing songs and stories for the play after this South Park wraps up in a few weeks and won’t return to Comedy Central until March-ish.
We think this is a really good fit between writers, and the recent Prop 8 hulabaloo has us ready to mock Mormons again.
Check out some musical moments from Avenue Q and Parker/Stone after the cut…
