Try as hard as they might, but the latest collaboration between HBO and Alan Ball has been a little lacking lately. Maybe it was the boring pilot, peppered with scenes that promised something spectacular but fizzled out (the redneck vampire) or learning that draping a piece of silver on a vamp would utterly immobilize them.

That said, we’ve been waiting for some sort of pay-off from the show where vampires and kinky speed blurring sex go together like every other film about the subject. On last Sunday’s episode, “Cold Ground,” people die and everyone acts the only way Alan Ball knows how to write: by having sex. A lot of sex. And showing breasts. Hoo-ray.
