These comments were culled from our Johnny Depp/Disney post, where we announced along with the internet: Johnny Depp will be the Mad Hatter, Tonto and return as Jack Sparrow for Pirates of the Caribbean 4.

MovIeFreaKE, this rant’s for you…

We think you’re right on the money, but we all might have our expectations let down. It all depends on what story the Mouse House decides to saddle Captain Jack with, though we’re pretty damn sure that it WILL be mostly Depp as Jack Sparrow.

The main thrust of the original Pirates trilogy was Elizabeth (Keira Knighley) and William (Legolas), the entire story was built around those two and their lives inter-weaving throughout a grand Pirate War. Without putting too much critical weight on a trilogy that started off as a animatronic-laden ride in a corporate theme-park, the first three movies were about destiny and romance between the two attractive people placed in the fantasy world.

For all the faults of At World’s End, a large amount of credit should be given to Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, the writers of the trilogy. First, for taking a ride and a paycheck and making a damn enjoyable pirate movie, and second for getting another, larger paycheck and managing to expand the first film into a trilogy without feeling like the second and third films were tacked on. Themes carried over, the compass - just a prop in film one - ends up being key, the whole plot arch of the Commodore, it’s interwoven. Unlike The Matrix, Pirates dealt with it’s story in a fairly consistent manner.

If you didn’t like it, that’s not their fault, they delivered something as air-tight as a multi-million dollar mega-swashbuckler can be.

Which brings us to Pirates 4, since Elizabeth and William’s re-insertion into the franchise would invalidate the flash-forward glimpse we get of them at the end of World’s…um…End.

The Fountain of Youth, what Jack appears to be sailing for at the end of 3 (with Barbosa on his tail?), would seemingly make a great stand-alone 4th film, or at least a good starting point for a “Sparrow” trilogy that follows the character wherever he needs to go. The crazed Pirate has a family (consisting of Keith Richards and a shrunken head), a drive (freedom) and a weakness (lust for immortality has replaced his need for a ship). We’d follow Jack Sparrow’s quest for immortality, but there’s a good chance that would take us to…

Florida?

Yeah, that doesn’t sound like a big action flick to us either.

But, there was one more Pirates 4 movie that CinemaBlend was tipped off to (tipped on to?) about a year ago:

“the ending of Pirates 3, the fountain of youth story might not be the only story they might used the next pirate’s film. The fountain story could used in another form to introduce the story for Pirates 4… the next film might be a departure from the same formula of the last three movies as well, meaning that Jerry Bruckheimer could be planning to enter the realm of Science Fiction this time around and it could be the heart of a new trilogy with Jack Sparrow and his crew of misfits. Some of the brainstorming going around involves some Jules Verne type of scenarios involving some pretty big flying machines, a man who wants to rule more than just the ocean, a encounter with the most famous and dangerous pirate of all, a race to get to a lost world (Hint, Hint) and Jack and his crew going to where no pirate has gone before

Flying Machines! Blue/Black Beard (both? Bruise Beard?)! Atlantis!

This goes in a weird direction, yes, but just about as weird as a witch lady becoming a giant then turning into crabs and somehow making a whirlpool in the ocean so a bunch of pirates can fight a squid-man who is being controlled by someone who has his heart in a box.

Either way, we’ve got a few months to go before we learn anything about Pirates 4. We just wanted to come out an say that more Jack Sparrow was the most exciting part announced for Johnny Depp as far as we’re concerned.
