Let’s re-cap a little of Hounddog, since we’re pretty sure we haven’t talked about it while The B&U has been alive. Hounddog, the passion project of Deborah Kampmeier, is the story of Lewellen, played by Dakota Fanning. Lewellen doesn’t have a lot going for her, her mother is crazy, her dad gets struck by lightning and – for some reason – becomes mentally handicapped, she finds escape in Elvis but isn’t able to escape being raped.

Oh right, it’s that Dakota Fanning rape moive. Yes, yes it is.

Dave actually got to read Hounddog when it was still being shopped around, and we can’t imagine the film turning out to be one iota of awesome. In an unrelated meeting, Dave also got to shake hands with Deborah Kampmeier himself, but disliked the script for Hounddog so much that he didn’t mention to her that she had read it, because at that point, the bad buzz was abound.

We’re pretty sure Dave’s thoughts could be paraphrased as: “this movie is like To Kill A Mockingbird if it was written by an angsty 16-year-old who had no idea how the world, or the south, works.”

We doubt that Hounddog ended up being any good, which might be why it’s been a long time coming in terms of getting a release date. The official site has now been updated with the tease “Coming to theaters September 19th” and some slide-guitar music that sounds like it was ripped off from the TV adaptation of The Stand.

Trailer below the cut, should you be interested.
