With the success of that other 1980s giant robot movie, much was mentioned about Voltron making a move to the big, silver screen. Justin Marks, the guy who is also working on SuperMax (the Green Arrow movie) and Masters of the Universe scripts have penned this one and landed positive reviews.

Now, Variety reports that Relativity Media, a Ryan Kavanaugh production company is in negotiations to finance the film with Fox’s New Regency with plans to use green-screen-heavy effects like Zach Snyder’s 300 to pull off giant tiger robots with a “moderate budget.”

In the world of giant robot movies, “moderate” could still be huge, but details have not been released.

Marks’ take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico, where five survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth’s invaders.
