We only have one compliant about the Resident Evil adaptation films written and sometimes directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (upcoming Death Race) and starring Milla Jovovich. It’s a simple one: if they were going to make out-ther, bat-shit-crazy zombie movies, why did they have to go and ruin everything we liked about the Resident Evil video game franchise?

Take the Silent Hill movie. Not the best movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it was fearless in it’s adaptation, stringing together multiple storylines and showing us on film some of the scariest moments from the game. We saw Silent Hill knowing that the siren would scare the crap out of us before plunging us into a nightmare world. So much so that when it first went off, our pulses increased.

Resident Evil, on the other hand, threw out a George A Romero script based on the first Resident Evil video game (in the mansion, you’ll remember) and threw in some sort of smart computer, and underground lab and a character named Alice that made no sense. Especially when the sequel came along and Alice was suddenly super-powered.

We didn’t even get off our asses to go see Resident Evil: Extinction because we don’t care about Alice, and we stopped caring about The Umbrella Corporations suddenly scatter-shot plans for the T-Virus. We don’t care about the film story-lines. The video game quadrilogy capper, Resident Evil 4, took place in some abandoned European village with a whole new set of zombies (parasites?) and a plot to kidnap a little girl who annoyingly got herself killed a lot.

We enjoyed that game, especially on the Wii which allowed you to rampage through the shooter much faster with the touch-sensitive wand.

Now Paul W.S. Anderson is talking to MTV about Resident Evil 4…

From the Movies Blog:

“Resident Evil: Extinction,” the third video-game to big screen adaptation in the popular series will likely not be the last, Anderson said, although talks for a fourth film are still in the very earliest stages of development.

“I’m just starting to talk to Sony about it,” Anderson confessed. “I don’t even know if anything will come of it, but there’s a possibility it might happen.”

It would seem like a sure thing given the ending of “Extinction,” which saw Alice (Milla Jovovich) beside herself with rage — literally, thanks to hundreds of perfect clones - promising to travel to the Umbrella Corporation’s headquarters in Japan. But Anderson, who scripted the first three films, says a concrete story hasn’t yet been decided upon. In fact, it’s coming up with a plausible, kick-ass story that’s momentarily holding him up.

“I love the ‘Resident Evil’ franchise and we always try to make the best possible movie we can. If we could find a good ‘Resident Evil 4’ to make, then we would do it,” he said. “But I wouldn’t just do it for the sake of it, that’s for sure.”

That surprises us, because we thought the only reason Paul W.S. Anderson did anything was “just for the sake of it.”
