We’re unsure if this is good or bad news, but Zack Snyder (300), told the New York Times that his current superhero epic, The Watchman, is quickly “nearing three hours long and I know I have a fight on my hands just with that.”

The Times article speculates that an extended Director’s Cut DVD of the flick might run around four-and-a-half hours, if a ultimate edition of the DVD is released folding in the comic-within-the-comic The Black Freighter…

In the Watchmen graphic novel, a side-comic is read by a kid sitting by a newsstand. The story covers the desperate attempts of a sailor’s attempts to get home to warn his family about the coming of the Black Freighter, a phantom ship.

Now, Warner Brothers has announced that The Black Freighter will get its own animated DVD feature released only five days after The Watchman hits theaters. Gerard Butler will be voicing the narrator who has to warn his family.

You can find more info on Warner’s DVD release tactics here at the NYT.
