We can’t tell you how freaking excited we are just at the mention of possible Goosebumps movies. Seriously! Goosebumps!
If I, Dave, rotate in my chair 180 degrees, I would be facing a box filled with at least 43 Goosebumps titles, mostly from #1-#50, since afterwards, R.L. Stine’s ghostwriters got lazy. We also have the Monster Collection #2 with all 3 Night of the Living Dummy books compiled into one. The dummy has flashing LEDs for eyes on the cover. We love that one.
Anyway, Columbia has bought the property, and Scholastic’s Deborah Forte is producing alongside Neal Moritz via Original Film. they say they plan to option it as a franchise, and are fast-tracking it: looking for a writer.
Perhaps the most interesting quote in the Variety article is: “The time is ripe for doing a movie,” said Forte, who dubbed “Goosebumps” the original “safe scare” property. “The first generation of ‘Goosebumps’ fans are in their early 20s now.”
Wait. “Safe scare” sounds PG to PG-13, but pointing out that most of the fans are…well, like Dave…sounds like they could push Goosebumps into harsher territory for the older fans.
We’re not sure which we’d like more. The Goosebumps TV series had more swings-and-misses than hits, but that might have been because of the budget.
We’d love to be scared by Goosebumps again, but taking a children’s book property and moving it far away from its “safe scare” roots is probably something the studio won’t allow.
But it’d be pretty sweet, huh?
