It’s The Happening! And soon, it will be.
After The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable wrote M Night Shyamalan a blank check, he started to go off the rails just a tad. We liked Signs, to a certain extent. We like Signs as a movie about religion, but hated it as a movie about Aliens. We like signs as a film where Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix act themselves out of a paper bag before going crazy with fame one way or another, but they did both go crazy.
The Village…well, we all know that didn’t turn out the way it was supposed to. We feel very bad for Bryce Dallas Howard, who keeps doing her best in films that keep flopping. At least she has her kid to distract her for a few years. Then, she can grab a part worthy of her talent and stop wasting away in The Village, Spider-Man 3 and As You Like It.
Lady In Water was laughable. We don’t walk out of movies, but we do turn to random people sitting close to us and ask if they want to make out rather than focus on some sort of grass creature and magical swimming pool.
Now, someone at Collider has seen The Happening and has a review (some spoilers included). We can sum it up this way: the reviewer actually seems to be a Shyamalan fan, but nonetheless ends his review with this:
Seeing a Shyamalan has become this horrifically abusive relationship where I desperately cling to the belief that if I keep loving him, he’ll stop hitting me. I’m already telling myself that “The Last Airbender” will be fascinating because its an adaptation rather than an original creation. That’ll help, right? Because “The Happening” just makes me want to cry.
