The negotiations between the Screen Actors Guild and the producers and money-lovers of the AMPTP have decided to meet both today and tomorrow to continue negotiations that all industry news sites have dubbed futile.
AFTRA, SAG’s annoying little sister is ready to step in on Wednesday and negotiate a deal that will work as a wedge in-between SAG and what SAG is demanding, so what does SAG do?
Reduces their demands.
What they are no longer asking for and why it’s f*cking stupid after the cut.
THR reports that SAG has reduced their residual bid on DVDs from a flat 100% increase (double DVD residuals) to a smaller, easier to swallow, downright wussy 15%. Not only that, but SAG has all but thrown out their position on pay increases for guest spots and extra work, screwing the littlest of little guys.
All these reductions would be totally Kosher if they realistically could bring everyone to a decision before the June 30th strike. But that ain’t gonna happen. Everyone involved with the two additional days of negotiating seems pretty damn sure that these two days just show continued good faith, not any indication of progress.
By reducing their demands, SAG is waving a grey flag; not the black flag od death-before-dishonor or the white flag of surrender, but the grey flag of weakness. Meanwhile, the AMPTP looks like the kindly old uncle, who will let you win at any game you want unless it really matters.
If SAG keeps sending signals of weakness, expect the hammer of a strike to be short-lived.
We guess that’s good news.
