Dr. Phil McGraw was going to do a whole show about the recent Florida beating where the teenaged suspects videotaped themselves during the attack. Seems like great fodder for a man that has tried to help Britney Spears only to get skewered by basically every media outlet who had nothing better to report on that week (there’s a what going on? War? Naw, stop foolin’!).
Too bad he can’t do the show because a member of his staff became personally involved in the story.
From the New York Times:
The television psychologist known as Dr. Phil pulled the plug on plans for a story on the Florida teenagers jailed for participating in a videotaped beating after learning that members of his staff helped one of the eight suspects post bond, The Associated Press reported. Terri Corigliano, a spokeswoman for “Dr. Phil” McGraw, wrote in an e-mail message that although the production had helped in the past when guests needed financial assistance to come on the show, “in this case, certain staff members went beyond our guidelines (re the bail being paid).” She continued: “These staff members have been spoken to and our policies reiterated. In addition, we have decided not to go forward with the story as our guidelines have been compromised.” Ranging in age from 14 to 18, the suspects face kidnapping and misdemeanor battery charges, as well as a felony charge of witness tampering, in connection with the beating of another teenager, which was videotaped and then widely viewed on television and the Internet.
Um, who was producing the show when that was happening?
We didn’t actually see the videotape of the beating, but we know that this sort of thing happens in London all the time and you don’t see television personalities donating money to the suspects.
Faux Pas, Dr. Phil. I bet you were hoping no one noticed.
