Just how much power to the legions of Star Wars fans have in the film industry? Enough to keep Superhero Movie out of the Top 5 Box Office earners this weekend, apparently, or that’s what the industry would have you think (maybe because the idea of Horton Hears A Who being successful on it’s own is still weird to some of us).

In case you haven’t heard, there’s this movie called Fanboys that is about a whole bunch of Star Wars fans trying to steal a print of Episode I from Skywalker Ranch. That’s the plot that is consistent thus far. The movie was picked up, went through a series of expensive re-shoots, wrapped production two years ago and still is on the shelf because of two different versions that have tested well.

One version, the original one, has the group of Star Wars friends stealing the print because one of their friends has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and will not see the theatrical release. In the second version of the film, this plot has been deleted and the geeks go to steal the print “because why not?”

News of the cancer plot being removed by the Weinstiens spurred internet disgust from Star Wars fans that want an emotional center to the movie, but the W Bros claim that the version without the cancer plot “tested better.”

When that “better” was rumored to only be a difference of two points, a group of Star Wars fanatics called the 501st started this website, urging a boycott of Darth Weinstien until the original version hits theaters.

This weekend, fans of Fanboys protested outside of theaters showing the Weinstien’s Superhero Movie, prompting Harvey to tell the rabid fans that both versions of the movie will see release on DVD.

“This is more about avoiding picket lines at ‘Superhero’ than it was about making a decision about the release of our movie,” said Kevin Mann, one of the Fanboys producers to the Hollywood Reporter.

Fanboys still doesn’t have an official release date, which means there is still time to push Darth Weinstien towards the original release.

If you didn’t the first time, jump over to the 501st’s website and join the movement, because sticking it to Harvey Weinstien is something you don’t get to do too often.
