When Forgetting Sarah Marshall comes out, you best go to the theater and take a gander if you are a Muppet fan because the same writing and directing team, themselves spun-off the Apatow comedy powerhouse, has been tapped to provide a new Muppet movie.
Jason Segal (Freaks and Geeks, Knocked Up) and director Nick Stoller will write for Stoller to direct.
Adds Variety:
In “Sarah Marshall” Segel’s character writes a “Dracula” musical performed by puppets. Those cloth creatures were custom-made by the Henson puppeteers, and the experience emboldened Segel to pitch his concept for a Muppets movie when he was invited in for a general meeting with exec Kristin Burr. Segel got a deal in the room and enlisted Stoller to co-write and direct the project.
The Muppets have been dumbed down in recent movie incarnations, so the Segal/Stoller voice could really do some good in gaining a wider audience.
But we are talking about Muppets in a post Avenue Q world, so full-bore adult Muppets have been done.
We always felt that Kermit and Fozzy worked best in vaudeville.
Which is why we were thrilled to find the whole Muppet Movie on YouTube. We’ll show you where to find part one if you “Read More.”
