Ok, we give. It’s been a boring week for breaking news. Boob jobs, shoplifting, one rogue case of cancer sort of got us excited, but gone are the early days of ’08 where people were dying of accidental overdoses and being committed on national television.
We’re not making a plea for Dustin Diamond to start killing people (are we?), but we want to justify why were are now bringing up the Sex and the City trailer about a week after it was released.
Dave reached out to his friend Emily, who not only knows HBO shows like the back of her hand, but is a pretty big Sex and The City fan as far as fans go.
Here’s the trailer, and here’s the reactions:
Well, this is longer and more revealing of a trailer than I ever expected. I feel like I have now seen the movie; however, that certainly will not be stopping me or anyone else from paying $12 to view the film. What’s good here is that we see that Big stands (with a full name submission) Carrie up at the alter which many of us had been aware of thanks to hoards of people watching filming in NYC. But better than that not happening till the end of the movie, it seems as though that is just the intro to an attempt at a return to the original tone of the show: a celebration of cynicism, lonesomeness, personal fulfillment and fabulousness with friends.
All of our ladies have new hurdles (really Steve?). It is wonderful to see Charlotte with her family and expecting. In this case it is almost better that we know going in what’s happening as it is not Dickens, everyone will talking about it and nothing will stop people from seeing it. Most notably though, is the suggestion that Samantha will cheat on Smith. What I liked about Samatha’s choice in the end the series is that she came to realize on her own that she did not need men to validate her, but she could be happy with smith who was gorgeous, not threatened my her or her sexuality and treated her right. By having her cheat, yes, superficially one could say monogamy is not her thing, which i respect… but i also dont want to see her abused at the expense of amusing an audience
The main question we are left with is will the film be true to the show or book. In the end of the book Carrie is single and a Samantha character most certainly would be. The show conformed to what the audience wanted as well as the mainstream ideas of what the show had become. Its quite a paradox as the show was revolutionary because it embraced and celebrated women’s independence and ownership of their sexuality with simple question, “Who needs a man?” But by then end we wanted all our ladies with their respective suitors.
Thus the perpetual single girl as well as all her friends even the one more adverse to commitment, are all committed. the question remains will the film be true to the fairy tale ending, or are we in for return of original cynicism. from the trailer it appears it may be a good combination, but it will never be what what the show once was.
Dave Says:
How is this not disgusting to everyone? I’m sorry, Em, but all I see here are white women too rich to worry about anything worth worrying about.
Good chick flicks have an interesting twist for guys. Bad example, but Fever Pitch had the Red Sox. Then again, other chick flicks don’t have a built in audience as rabid as Sex and the City.
Every time I’ve watched Sex and the City I can’t help but feel that it’s draw and premise centers around the assumption that everyday women like to pretend that they are rich sluts who never get a happy ending.
Being rich doesn’t make being shallow easier, and more important being rich doesn’t make being shallow any less disgusting.
However, who am I to trash pure escapism even though it is bad for you? I’m going to go see Wanted for Angelina Jolie, even though it looks to be a renter. Not to mention that I occasionally splurge on solid gold plating for everyday household items.
Like my gold-plated plunger. Do you unclog your toilet with gold, plebeian?
