At this weekend’s Independent Spirit Awards, actor Colin Firth (Bridget Jones’ Diary and Nanny McPhee), made a little tasteless joke about slain actress/writer Adrienne Shelly.

Recently, Shelly’ murderer coped a plea bargain, which has brought the story of the actress turned scribe back to into the spotlight. Shelly was killed a mere two months before her film Waitress made a splash at last year’s Sundance.

According to Showbiz Spy:

Actor Colin Firth made an embarrassing gaff at an awards event by asking Adrienne Shelly to come to the stage - more than a year after she was murdered.

The Love Actually hunk was introducing the best screenplay at the Independent Spirit Awards when actress Adrienne Shelly’s name was mentioned for ‘Waitress’, which she wrote and starred in before her murder.

Firth left an awkward gasp from the audience as he then asked “Is she here?”

Too soon, Firth?

Please go back and check the facts, or listen to this again. Mr. Firth is an intelligent and compassinate human being and I doubt he would say something like this. What he said to Keri Russell, after she announced the name of the film and the writer is :
“Is that for you? Go.”

This didn’t happen.
I saw the live transmission, and there seemed to be a problem with the autocue, which caused some confusion, but he didn’t make any joke about Adrienne Shelly.
Showbiz Spy should watch a playback of the event and then print a retraction and apology.
