There have been strong buzzings that crazy genius cum commercial sellout Julie Taymor (Titus, Across The Universe) had cast her Across The Universe leads – Jim Stugress and Evan Rachel Wood - as Peter Parker and Mary-Jane in her upcoming Broadway adaptation of Spider-Man featuring music by Bono and The Edge.

Surprise, surprise, the rumors might be true, says a spy who attended a workshop for the musical in progress:

i was privileged to get to attend a workshop of spiderman (hopefully to be on broadway) the week before christmas. saw evan rachel wood and jim sturgess. they are both vocal powerhouses, both very tall, very attractive. so much chemistry, i’d be worried if i was marilyn manson. erw plays the role of mary jane perfectly. she puts kirsten dunst to shame. which isn’t a surprise, it doesn’t take much, but erw’s acting and singing abilities make her the leading talent amongg her peers. as for the unlikely choice of jim sturgess for peter parker, his american accent is flawless and he has the mischevious sparkle that tobey maguire lacks in his wooden acting. hope taymor makes this to broadway. this was the second round of workshops. erw and js were perfect, some of the supporting cast was weaker, but they covered it perfectly. the lyrics are kind of rock opera sounding, think jesus christ superstar meets comic books. bono and edge teamed together with taymor to write this and it shows.
erw looked more normal than usual. wore a pair of black slacks and a powder pink turtleneck. js looked like your tyical hot british guy. during the q&a they played footsie under the table. no pictures were allowed, just audio interviews. julie wants to finalize before allowing pictures or video but i think a guy was taking pictures with his cellphone camera.
